A gemstone strengthens a planet. If that planet is already causing difficulty in your chart, strengthening it makes matters worse.
Gemstones are among the most misused remedies in modern practice. They are sold by weight and by colour, often without anyone having looked at the buyer's chart at all. The logic of the remedy makes this a genuine problem.
The principle
Each stone corresponds to a planet and amplifies its influence. A blue sapphire strengthens Shani; an emerald strengthens Budh. If Shani is a functional benefic for your ascendant and is running its period, that stone may help considerably. If Shani is the lord of a difficult house for your chart, the same stone can intensify exactly what you were hoping to relieve.
What a proper recommendation includes
A complete gemstone recommendation names the stone, the minimum effective weight for your build, the metal for the setting, the finger, and the day and hour to first wear it. If any of these is missing, the recommendation is incomplete.
When no stone is needed
Frequently, none is. A chart may be well supported already, or the difficulty may call for a discipline rather than an ornament. Being told plainly that you do not need to buy anything is a legitimate outcome of a consultation.
